Mindfulness is a state of awareness, a tool, that allows you to be fully present in any given moment, free of judgment to see more clearly through any given situation.
When you practice mindfulness, you tune in to the present moment with an awareness of your feelings, thoughts and emotions. When the mind starts to wander and the clutter of thoughts compete for your attention, one needs to focus back into the “now moment” versus any past or future thoughts. There is no good or bad, right or wrong, you are not judging, you are simply, aware and present.
Becoming deliberately mindful helps you to focus and process the world around you in real time. When you have become really good at shifting from a reactionary state to a state of awareness of the now moment, you are able to a put space between yourself and your reactions, thus breaking down your conditioned responses to things.
Applying mindfulness to any given situation, allows you to acquire a greater understanding of it. Consequently, you will see it and understand it from a place of knowing. Mindfulness is a state of being, an invisible action that holds magnificent power of awareness.

When I started meditating, I learned this particular type of meditation on my own because it is easier to practice. You may also decide to learn to meditate with a group to stay inspired and motivated.
